Handset manufacturer companies are now focusing on launching new smartphones in the price segment of less than Rs 20,000. In the last few weeks, some popular phones like Oppo K3 (Review), Realme X (Review) and Vivo Z1 Pro (Review) have been launched in the market in a budget of less than Rs. 20,000.  Oppo has now launched its new Oppo A9 smartphone priced at Rs 15,490 in the market, which will compete with many popular handsets in the market. Now the thing to be seen will be whether Oppo A9 can challenge its rival handset in the market or not? To know this, we have tested it, let's know ...

Design of Oppo A9

The design of the Oppo A9 smartphone is similar to Oppo A7 (review) and Oppo A5s (review) and all three handsets are part of the same series. Oppo A9 has a large 6.5-inch display and small earpiece. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 has been used for the protection of the display. The plastic screen protector will already be installed on the phone.

The Oppo A9 has thin bezels on the top and side but the border is slightly thicker at the bottom of the phone. It is long due to which the hands may have to be slightly stretched to reach the top of the display. The power button is on the right side of the phone, while the volume button is found on the left side.

The fingerprint sensor has been given on the back of Oppo A9. Just above the fingerprint sensor are two rear cameras with LED flash. Micro-USB port will be found at the bottom of the phone, which is a bit disappointing because many phones in this price segment are equipped with USB Type-C port.

This phone will also get 3.5mm headphone jack and loudspeaker at the bottom. Oppo A9 has two color variants - Purple and Marble Green. We have a marble green color variant available for review. The retail box will get a 10-watt charger, transparent case, and headphones.

Oppo A9 specifications and software

If we look at the price of Oppo A9, there are some good specifications in it. The phone has a MediaTek Helio P70 processor, the same chipset was also used in Realme 3 (review). The presence of this chipset in phones priced at Rs 15,490 may disappoint some, while the Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review) in the market has used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor and the Snapdragon 710 in Oppo K3 (Review) and Realme X (Review). The chipset has been given.

The same variant of Oppo A9 has been launched which is equipped with 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. The phone has a 4020 mAh battery and weighs 190 grams. For connectivity, the phone includes 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth version 4.2, USB-OTG support. The phone has other sensors including light, proximity, and gyroscope.

Oppo A9 runs on ColorOs 6.0 based on Android Pie. Our review unit is running on the July Security Patch. The user interface is the same as we saw in the recently launched Oppo K3 and Reality X. However, Oppo A9 will get more bloatware pre-installed, UC Browser, Facebook, WPS Office, Newspoint, Dailyhunt, Halo, Paytm, Wynk Music, WebNovel and Amazon app will already be available.

There is also Game Center, Game Space and Oppo Appstore for apps and games. We found that installed apps like UC Browser and Halo keep sending push notifications every hour. These apps can also be uninstalled from a smartphone if you wish.

Oppo A9 performance, battery life, and camera

The MediaTek Helio P70 processor is used in Oppo A9, this chipset handles all the tasks of the day without any problems. There was no problem in launching apps and multitasking as well. 4 GB RAM is capable of providing a smooth experience. As we told you, its counterpart handsets are equipped with more powerful chipsets at the same price.

We liked to see the content on Oppo A9 as the display is crisp and bright and its viewing angles are also good. The sound on the speaker at the bottom of the phone becomes louder. The fingerprint sensor on the back panel of the phone quickly unlocks the phone. The Face Unlock feature uses a selfie camera, it is easy to set up and it unlocks the phone faster.

While playing PUBG Mobile we noticed that the game was set to Medium Quality Preset and Graphics Balanced and Frame Rate Medium. The game ran without any problems in these settings. OPPO game space cleared the RAM and disable pop-up notifications. We played the game for 20 minutes and found that 4 percent of the battery was consumed. The phone was not too hot which is a good sign.

The 4,020 mAh battery in the Oppo A9 provides very good battery life. Phone usage lasted more than a day after normal usage such as active WhatsApp account, use of Google Maps for navigation and playing PUBG Mobile. However, charging is slow when charging the phone with a 10-watt charger, it takes more than two hours to fully charge the phone.

Oppo A9 is equipped with the dual rear camera setup. On the backside is a 16-megapixel primary sensor with aperture F / 1.8 with LED flash and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. A 16-megapixel selfie camera with F / 2.0 aperture will be available on the front panel. The camera app on Oppo A9 is similar to what we have seen in other Oppo smartphones.

Apart from the usual photo and video modes, it has portrait, night, pano, expert, time-lapse and slo-mo. There are separate buttons for HDR and Dazzle color. The default camera app provides filters that can be applied before taking a shot. Oppo A9 also has AI Scene Recognition.

Photos captured from the Oppo A9 in daylight were good, the phone locks the focus before taking a picture. We found that the picture of the objects which were near, was good but the picture of the objects which were situated at a short distance was lacking in detail. Close-up shots were good and the AI of the phone also helped.

Oppo A9 maintains a difference in subject and background. The sharpness and detail are captured well in the picture but the AI boosts the colors slightly. The edge detection of the phone was good. Oppo A9 does not allow Blur to adjust before or after taking a shot. We found that the detail shot captured well in the portrait shot from Oppo A9.

There may be a slight reduction in camera performance in low light. There was a lack of detail in the picture, but the Oppo A9 keeps the noise under control, the picture was good but when the photo is zoomed, the grain appears. Night mode helps in improving detail and bright photos. The selfie was taken with a 16-megapixel front camera also came good.

The detail in the picture was well captured, the selfie camera-captured portrait shots were also acceptable but edge detection needs some improvement. This phone does not blur the gap between the person's or her body. Both the primary and selfie camera are capable of recording video at 1080 resolution. Video stabilization is also provided, with little shimmer effect seen in the video clip in low light.

Our decision

Oppo A9 is a good smartphone but it looks less attractive when compared to the competition. With this phone of Rs 15,490, it seems that the price of Oppo A9 is slightly higher than Oppo 3 and other smartphones in the same price segment. The MediaTek Helio P70 is a capable processor but its counterpart is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor in the Redmi Note 7 Pro (Review), Snapdragon 710 chipset in Realme X and Oppo K3.
